You’ll Know How Much Time It’ll Take You To Finish The AudiobookĪudiobook apps like Audible or have an inbuilt feature that shows the time it requires to finish an Audiobook. You can turn your time into something worthy by listening to an audiobook. The biggest benefit of audiobooks is that there are many things to do while listening to audiobook like cleaning, driving, walking, public transport, mindless day-to-day tasks, etc. Audiobooks are better for the Environmentġ.Audiobooks can help you get out of reading slumps. You’ll know how much time it’ll take you to finish the audiobook.Infinite Jest for example, became eye-bleedingly dull, which for that unduly praised breeze block, is saying something. However some books do not translate well to the audio format. I even used to listen to audiobooks at work in the past, but it was a position where I was left to myself in an office or workshop, so nobody cared much if I spent all day with audiobooks and podcasts. Some novels like Dune I actually mostly read on my commute to and from school as a boy, but the condition of the book afterwards wasn't worth the effort. I take it with me whilst I cook, clean, travel, and use my computer. Audiobooks have been my preference for the last year or so, and in some cases, I think I maybe prefer them now. However in my current situation, I have no space for storing books, or even to keep library copies in good condition. I have fond memories of finding a small corner concealed by bookcases, where there used to be an old relic Acorn Archimedes stuffed on to a spare desk. If I had no commitments and free time to lounge in libraries as I did for a good deal of my late teens, then I would read books ad nauseum. This makes these two colors such a beautiful pairing which are able to create balance and contrast in equal measure. Hunter green is a strong and intense color, while blush pink is soft and understated. This might look like a bathroom vanity unit painted in hunter green with a gray marble sink or hunter green kitchen cabinets with a gray tile backsplash. In kitchens and bathrooms where hunter green is used for cabinetry, gray is often chosen for wall tiles or flooring for a combination of traditional and modern styling. Choose dove gray with hunter green for a soft and breezy style or slate gray for a deep and dark intensity. Gray is a quintessentially contemporary color in any of the many varied shades of gray available. If you want to ensure your forest green room doesn’t look old-fashioned, you should add elements of gray to the space. GrayĪlthough hunter green is a trendy modern shade, it is also a color that was used traditionally in English pubs and French royal estates, which can sometimes mean it looks like an aged antique color. This is a color palette that will work well in any room but is especially nice in living rooms and bathrooms as they create a serene and fresh atmosphere similar to a spa retreat. They could also be used with a pale shade of beige if you want to add warmth to the space. These two colors are best used with white to help balance out the intensity and ensure a crisp feel. It brings out a more playful side of forest green and can add a refreshing sense to a room. Teal is a vibrant shade of blue-green that is heavily saturated and full of personality. If you want to ensure a forest green room feels tranquil, then pair it with teal. This color palette would make for an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere in a dining room, and it could also look stylish in a small bathroom or washroom. These two colors can be used to achieve a grand and decadent style in a room, but they will also work well for more casual, rustic themes.Ĭhoose a third neutral color to use with grape and forest green, such as black or even a metallic-like gold. Grape is a deep shade of purple, which looks rich and luxurious with hunter green. In a forest green room, magenta accessories can provide a shock of personality, and these two colors help each other to look even more intense.įor a quirky designer look, choose a vivid magenta accent chair in a room with hunter green walls. Magenta is a rich and vibrant pink-purple color. This color combination works best with a third neutral color, such as gray, white, or black. For example, in a room that is predominantly hunter green, add a few small splashes of coral with a coral art print or some coral plant pots.Īlternatively, in a coral room, add some contrast with hunter green cushions or hunter green blankets. Hunter green is a color that can go well with salmon but to avoid these shades from becoming too overstimulating, use one of them sparingly. This color provides a stark contrast against hunter green in terms of dark versus bright and warm versus cool. It is a bright and cheerful color that is warming thanks to the presence of orange in the shade. Salmon is a color combining both pink and orange, which is named after the color of the raw flesh of the salmon fish. Use these shades together in a cozy living room, with a deep red heavy knitted blanket draped over a velvet hunter green sofa, ready to snuggle up with in front of a crackling log burning fire. These colors also work really well when used in home decor to create a warming and almost festive atmosphere. These colors can be used for bridesmaids’ dresses, as well as for the interior decor at a wedding venue. For a winter wedding, hunter green and deep red create a beautiful contrast that looks decadent alongside an ivory wedding dress. Some people say that red and green should never be seen, but this is a saying that has no basis in interior design or fashion. Best Colors to Pair with Hunter Green Deep Red Here we will explore which colors go with hunter green to make it pop and how to incorporate this shade into your home decor. Hunter green is a color that has really exploded onto the interior design scene over the last year or two and is now an enormously popular shade of green to use in any room in the home. It is a rich and earthy color that can be used to add depth and drama to a room, but it can also work well alongside more muted colors for a fresh and soothing space. Hunter green is a dark forest shade of green that has a little yellow mixed into it. At first, this would almost seem to be a way to save money to get more information across to the audience without having to actually put it on screen, but this is really an ingenious way of furthering the story. In The Empire Strike Back, the first thing that we are treated to is the traditional scrolling text along a background of stars, depicting what has happened between the last film and this one, and reminding us of the things that were mentioned in the last film but never explained. Obviously, it is much more than a simply made science fiction film, but like I said in my review of it, there was a lot of highly effective reliance on things that were not put on screen, such as Obi Wan's description of The Force to Luke. In the 1977 Star Wars, there is a clear reliance on simplicity in some parts. Luke takes his first steps to becoming a Jedi, and the hero myth restarts in The Return of the Jedi, except this time his mentor is Yoda.In a film like The Empire Strikes Back, especially a few years on the heels of such a mind-bogglingly great film like the original Star Wars, there is something that comes immediately to mind that would at first seem to count against the film, but instead only winds up increasing the respect that it commands. Luke's change comes when he remembers Obi-Wan saying, 'Use the force', and he uses it to help him aim his laser into the heart of the Death Star. When heroes succeed, they return from the special world, changed by their experiences forever. Luke loses his mentor when he sees Darth Vader kill Obi-Wan, which helps him find the strength he needs later on. There often comes a moment when they face death or loss and that experience gives them the strength to finally defeat the enemy. Next, the hero overcomes obstacles on the way to facing their greatest challenge. For Luke the mentor is, of course, Obi-Wan, the friends are Han Solo and the robots R2D2 and C3PO and the enemy is Darth Vader inside the special world of the Death Star. The next stage consists of passing tests, fighting enemies and meeting friends as the hero prepares to face their biggest challenge. When he finds Princess Leia's message to Obi-Wan Kenobi inside the robot R2D2, it is 'the call to adventure' that starts the hero on his journey.Īccording to Campbell, the hero at first refuses the call to adventure, but a mentor appears who helps them and they decide to 'cross the threshold' and travel into the 'special world' where the adventure happens. At the beginning of Star Wars, Luke lives an ordinary life with his aunt and uncle, repairing robots. Typically the hero starts the story living an ordinary life, but something happens that calls them to an adventure that changes everything. George Lucas was one of the early film directors to directly base his story on the 17 stages of the hero's journey. It's a tale that has been told for thousands of years, from the Ancient Greeks with The Odyssey to JK Rowling's Harry Potter books. In short, a hero sets off from home on a journey, where he overcomes obstacles and defeats enemies to return with a prize. In his book, Campbell analyses myths from all over the world to describe the 'monomyth' – a pattern that you can see in myths from every culture. Later editions of Campbell's book even featured Star Wars' hero Luke Skywalker on the front cover. That's because director George Lucas based Star Wars on the ideas in Joseph Campbell's 1949 book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. But, in fact, both films follow a structure that pre-dates all Hollywood films, that of the 'hero myth'. Critics of the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens have called the film unoriginal and predictable because the story so closely mirrors the very first Star Wars film in 1977. However, I feel that it’s often awkward and borders on inappropriate, even for high school. My students loved it and by April it was the perfect little reward to watch at the end of class, a bit each day. EXTRAĪ loose spin-off of the sitcom Friends, Extra is fantasticfor beginners, in the sense that it provides compelling, highly comprehensible input. I have a guide for all the episodes as well. If you don’t have flash, you can also use the episodes on YouTube. If you click on the link above, you can watch interactive lessons. This is a perfect end-of-the-year treat when students are getting restless, or to watch over the summer and keep up the language from Spanish 1. Set up as an interactive mystery show, my students really got into this one and didn’t mind that it’s a tiny bit outdated. MI VIDA LOCAĭesigned for absolute beginners, BBC produced this free show to introduce basic language, the kind you would need to get around town while traveling. Let’s start off with just free Spanish TV shows you can find on YouTube or other free sources. If you would like to use a resource that gives some accountability and helps your students get the most they can out of watching shows or movies in class, you might be interested in my editable movie guides and graphic organizers for students. I’ve done my best to give an idea of content you should be aware of, but of course preview and make sure these shows will work in your situation. Of course, it’s tough to find shows that are appropriate for middle school and high school classes. Why? Because they care about the plot and the people. But give them an interesting show, and they can’t get enough. Part of reason they dreaded those clips was that they had no relation, no meaning we cared about. I used to use a lot of isolated listening “practice” clips that my students totally dreaded. Because, as we all know: if it ain’t compelling, they aren’t acquiring much. That’s why a good show is gold. It was so much fun, and served two purposes: motivation, and input. If I slipped into English, I added a minute. That meant 10 minutes of Extra, at the end of class. I enacted a Spanish-only rule, and told the class that every day, for the rest of the year, I would write “10” on the board. Sometimes, though, if I’m sure the language is accessible, I let them get absorbed and try not to pause too often. At the end of Spanish 2, one year, we were getting frazzled and sort’ve limping to the end. If the show if not immediately comprehensible to them, it takes these extra activities to turn the show into meaningful input. Sometimes I incorporate a lot of extra activities, because when it comes to TV, it’s not just “listening practice.” As my classes get invested in the characters, and story, it’s a really great chance to have rich discussions and readings. When using Spanish shows in class, I vary my approaches depending on the circumstances. I can get them hooked onto authentic resources they’ll remember for years. We can travel to different places and cultures. Since then, I’ve realized just how amazing Spanish TV shows in class can be. We can bring native speakers straight into our classrooms. If you’d mentioned movies or shows to me as a new teacher, I’d have assumed you meant how we teachers sometimes use them (hey, we’ve been there right?): that last day before winter break, when the stack of grading gets too high, or a weird testing day when half the class is gone. Check out a few of the below picks on Netflix if you're in the mood for a good teen show - just prepare to feel some major nostalgia, as well as a wave of relief that you're no longer a teenager trying to survive high school.Inside: Spanish TV shows: a list of series you can (hopefully!) use in class. Each of these 15 teen movies and shows will bring you back to those intense four years in the hallways, for better or for worse. (Which actually makes sense - nothing is scarier than being a teenager and not knowing what to do with yourself. Some are super realistic and heady, while others verge on the supernatural or into straight horror. Luckily, there are a ton of these teen series and movies streaming on Netflix for when you need to scratch that nostalgic itch.Īll of these movies and shows dip into the complicated emotions of being a teen and surviving high school. Because of this, teen movies and shows, often set in a high school, are a genre in and of themselves. Everyone had to be a teenager once, for better or worse. It's one of the rare experiences that almost everyone shares, regardless of where they grew up, their gender, their race, or anything else. High school can be a heady swirl of emotions and events high and low - the thrill of crushes, the cruelty of bullying, scene drama, and figuring out who you are. It is important to note that positive space in photography is usually balanced with negative space to make an appealing composition. Positive photos often busy and active so that most of the focus is drawn towards the subject. The technique can illustrate emotions ranging from crowdedness, to power, to chaos, or even to movement in a photo. It is key component in most photographs that helps convey emotions towards an audience. Positive space is the idea that any part of a photo that includes the subject, stands out from the rest of the photo. The two main definitions of positive photography include positive space and positive film. The dark space surrounds, and I believe creates an abstract image that again leads the eye to the forms of the positive shapes.Īs the saying goes, “food for thought” and hopefully these photographs offer a new perspective on how we might use positive and negative space when creating our art.Positive has multiple meanings in the world of photography. With this photograph I wanted to do something different - black and white instead of color. This was a time when I was aware that the dark negative space would lead your eyes up the invisible stairs to the door above. This photograph was taken during a trip my wife, Kelly, and I took for our anniversary. I took a dance class, so the dancers would feel comfortable with my presence. This image was made when I really knew nothing about the art of photography much less negative and positive space. 1978 constantly draws you to the two clouds above the horizon, and 1975 uses only a small horizon at the bottom where the viewer’s gaze is constantly searching. Note here that the photographer uses color as the negative space. Both from Franco Fontana’s book Fullcolor. My wife, Kelly, had never seen this image before and when she saw it her response was, “That is beautiful.” Although there is the large area of negative space the viewer is constantly drawn back to the figure of Margrethe. Margrethe is almost lost in the image as she gazes out of the frame, while her arm brings the viewer’s eye back into it. Glendale Studio, 1920, by Edward Weston from Margrethe Mather and Edward Weston. My eyes go directly from the negative space to the face and back constantly searching the face…WHAT IS SHE LOOKING AT? Here, the negative space takes up about 80% of the image. Profile by William Gilchrist from The American Annual of Photography, 1933. Let’s take a look at several images from my collection of books, historical and current, that I believe give us insight into the use of both positive and negative space. However, doing so will make you consider each element in your scene more carefully, leading to much stronger compositions.” We’re so used to focusing on the main subject in a scene that it can seem strange to treat it almost as an afterthought. “Mastering the use of negative space takes time. All of this adds up to a more engaging composition.” It provides ‘breathing room’ giving your eyes somewhere to rest and preventing your image from appearing too cluttered with stuff. Negative space defines and emphasizes the main subject of a photo, drawing your eye to it. When you use it correctly, it gives a natural balance and sense of rightness to your composition. Negative space draws your eye to the subject of your art, giving it space to breathe. What you don’t include (negative space) is as important as what you do include (positive space). The interaction between these two elements is what directs your eye where to go when you view a design or painting. “What do positive and negative space mean in art? They are what create the tension in a piece. Two of my favorite quotes help define what I am looking for each time I look at a work of art and provide a thought-provoking explanation of the use of positive/negative space in the art of photography. I use the terms, artist and work of art to describe photographers and their photographs because I truly believe it to be one and the same. When looking at an artist’s work, I find the positive and negative space beyond the subject matter and often, when it works, it can turn a work of art from something great to something stunning. The subject of positive and negative space is something I often discuss. Just to clarify, you can avoid specifying both username and host in origin and destination, and the scp command will work just like the cp command, copying a local file to a local destination. And in the same way as with origin, if the host is not specified, the files will be copied locally. Same as above if the user is not specified but a hostname is given it will defaults to the current username and will try to log in the remote server using that user. The destination, where you specify the path where the files are going to be copied, once again, it can contain or not the information about the remote host and/or user in that host. If the user is not specified it will defaults to the current user in the machine where you are typing the command.
